We had faith all along but the tastemakers that they are, the mighty Pitchfork, have deemed the Black Iris - Best Coast 7” “terrific” and awarded it their “Best New Music” designation. Check out their review for a much better selection of words than I have at my disposal. Much thanks to them, and to anyone who already picked up the digital version. You can still get the A side over on the Black Iris label page, but both can be purchased from lala, etc, etc.
Thanks to the kindness of Spinner, we present Wallpapers’ latest video masterpiece, ‘Gettin’ Drip.’ Check out the article over on Spinner for a look behind the massive video budget and creative force involved.
From The Desk Of Black Iris: News from the Best Coast
Hello Everyone,
It has been an exciting month here at Black Iris. We are back from NYC where we hosted an amazing party at the new Ace Hotel. Our good friends Fool’s Gold performed and everyone had a blast as you can see from the photos. Thanks to all who came out and for those who couldn’t make it, we hope to do more of these events in the coming months.
Today is another exciting day for us as we are pleased to announce the release of our next 7” single, from the LA band Best Coast, out today. As always, the single was produced by Black Iris, this time in our new LA studio in Echo Park. The collaboration with Best Coast was a natural addition to the growing list of young, exciting new artists that we have had the pleasure to work with.
The single is already garnering lots of attention from Pitchfork, Stereogum, and The Fader, so we’re happy to share it with you now. You can download the A-side “When I’m With You” from our label site for free, or buy the two-sided single on iTunes, Amazon, and Lala.
While we think both coasts are equally awesome, in order to proceed with our ongoing efforts to find some of the best music in the country, we have partnered with Los Angeles’s Best Coast to release the next 7” in our series. Plug In Music has lots of nice things to say about them and us. Be on the lookout for more information on the single.
So Tay Zonday has kept us transfixed for the past few weeks. We just snapped out from it’s spell and we’re so far behind, but we’ll be back soon (with a vengence).
Our music was used in the film, Neighborhood Watch, which won the recent Richmond 48 Hour Film Fest, and will now be shown at the VA Film Festival at 9:30pm Thursday, November 5th at UVA’s Culbreth Theatre. If you’re in the area you should head over to Charlottesville and check it out, our friends from The Martin Agency, The Branching and Mondial Creative all did an awesome job putting it all together.
Black Iris finally returned to NY this week and we brought Fool’s Gold out from LA with us. Although we’re back in the studio today they’ll be kickin’ around the city for a few more days, so now’s your chance. Check out the hype Time Out gave them for their CMJ show Wednesday Oct. 21st at the Bowery Poetry Club.
Here’s some shots of the band from Prefix Mag from our party at the Ace Hotel.
The Heks Orkest shows last weekend were a total blast, and as far as we know no one broke anything (on stage or on the skate bowl.) Here’s a sampling of photos from the festivities. Keep an eye on the website for further announcements.
